Have a driving license. Travel insurance will not pay if you have an accident but do not have a license.

Rent a machine based on your abilities, not your ambitions.
Don't rent based on price. Cheaper machines usually have more miles and in some cases are less reliable.
Do an external inspection of the machine. Check the tires for any visible damage, the instruments and lights are all working.
Take photos and record any damage. Most importantly, check the brakes. If you are not happy with the condition of the bike, choose another one or go to another company.
Having new protective equipment will help minimize injury in the event of a collision.
