Port of Ermoupolis
It is a busy port, for shipbuilding and commercial activities, as well as passenger ships and pleasure boats. The wide bay invites the visitor for a walk along the shore, to get to know the sunny coastline before stopping for a coffee at one of the many seaside cafes.
Until about 1860 it remained one of Greece's leading commercial ports, increasingly rebuilding its fleet after the war.
Looking up at the Catholic Cathedral Behind the city rise two steep hills, both with a cathedral, overlooking the city. Ermoupolis was built between 1821-1830, as the capital of the newly liberated Greek nation after the revolution of 1821.
The Catholic Cathedral of Saint George, dating from 1824, was originally built on the hill of Ano Syros in 1200.
For centuries both the Catholic and Greek Orthodox communities lived peacefully in Ermoupolis. The beautiful Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas dates back to 1870.
Exploring the marble streets of Syros you will find many sweet shops with the delicious Turkish delight for which the island is famous.
Miaouli Square - Central square and town hall
Enjoy a stroll through the large pedestrian streets with fresh fruit markets, fashion boutiques, homewares and jewelry stores before emerging into the expansive Miaouli Square crowned by the impressive town hall dating back to 1898, an exquisite neoclassical building with timeless columns.
The square is noble and stately, surrounded by lush palm trees and elegant cafes. This is where the real life of Ermoupolis lives, in the small arcades and alleys that lead from the magnificent central square.
The Apollon Theater, not far from the square, was built at the height of Ermoupolis' dominance as the political and cultural capital of Greece, in 1864. Its design by the Italian architect Campo is a smaller version of the beautiful La Scala theater in Milan.
